R. Wayne Hillegas

HILLEGAS – R. Wayne, 89, Mount Hope, died September 7, 2026. Born April 29, 1937, in South Fork, son of the late Howard E. and Zelda M. (Croyle) Hillegas.

Survived by brother, H. Gene Hillegas, widower of Barbara (Wantiez); nieces, Debra Woods, Tonya Andrews, and Janine Hillegas; nephew, Randy Hillegas; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Wayne served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, serving stateside. A graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, he went on to earn his master’s degree and dedicate 30 years of his life to teaching mathematics in the Greater Johnstown School District. Wayne cherished the quiet bond he had with his horses. He was a lifelong member of the Greater Johnstown Saddle Club, where he served as a trail boss and rode countless miles on the trails he loved. A true traveler and lifelong learner, Wayne explored the world, including China, Russia, and Egypt. He treasured the opportunity to experience new places, cultures, and people. We will miss him but know he is now back in the saddle where he loved to be. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the Greater Johnstown Saddle Club, P.O.
