WESS – Mary Ellen, 86, New Germany, passed peacefully with family by her side, March 19, 2022. Born November 1, 1935, in Johnstown, daughter of Ferdinand and Mary E. (Grattan) Werfel. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Eugene “Mike” Wess, who died August 20, 2015; and infant sister, Margaret.
Survived by children, Christine, wife of Mark Mitchell, North Sutton, New Hampshire/The Villages, Florida; Kathleen, wife of Jay Glover, Youngstown, Pennsylvania; Jeanne and her significant other, Jon Picklo, New Germany; Michael, married to Tracy (McCall), New Germany; Beth, wife of Clifford Fetterman, Hollsopple; and Carol, wife of Scott Curtis, Summerhill; grandchildren, Nicole, Natalie (Max), Derrek, Alec, Chelsea, Evan, Haley, Shelby, Seth (Heather), Eli (Shiloh and her daughter, Ember), Andrew, and Michael; great grandchildren, Ava and Caleb; sisters, Judy Bertram and Lois Werfel; and brothers, Joseph, married to Linda (Delello); and Stephen, married to Janet (Mayancsik).
Mary Ellen had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord. She was member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Germany; enjoyed fellowship with friends in the Altar and Rosary Society and often attended Mass at her former parish, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Summerhill. Warm and kindhearted, she always made her clients feel welcome at her salon, which she owned and operated for more than 40 Years. During that time, she also worked as a hairdresser for Dimond Funeral Home. She was a talented seamstress, sewing many of her children’s clothes. She enjoyed quilting and painting and was an avid reader. Her gentle spirit, dedication, and loving nature were a blessing to friends and family. We will forever cherish her in our hearts.
Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Father Joseph C. Nale, celebrant.
