Mary Katherine Calaboyias-Raich

CALABOYIAS-RAICH – Mary K. “Bemba”, 77, of Seward, passed away September 14, 2025 at UPMC East Hospital Monroeville, after a short and courageous battle against cancer. She was born July 27, 1948, in Cambridge, Ohio, the daughter of the late Jack and Demetra (Pavlos) Calaboyias. Also, preceded in death by her brothers, Vasili and Peter; sister, Anna; and niece, Kimberly. 

She is survived by husband of 23 years, Michael J. Raich; daughter, Demetra Mavrophilipos; son-in-law, Markos; grandchildren, Antonia, Zacharias, and Emanuel of Atlanta; sister, Sophia Facaros; brother-in-law, Yianni; many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews who she loved like her own. She was also survived by her stepchildren, Monica, Antoinette, Georgiana, and Matt; and step grandchildren. She was affectionately referred to as “Little Yia Yia” by all. Mary was a dedicated teacher in the Pittsburgh City Schools for 30 years. Her love of teaching kept her involved as a substitute at United Elementary for 14 more years. Mary was a devout Greek Orthodox parishioner at Holy Dormition in Oakmont, St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Johnstown where she was raised, and St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church in Johnstown. Mary was a loving, caring, outgoing, beautiful soul. She will be loved and missed by everyone who came in contact with her. May her Memory Be Eternal! 

The family will receive friends at a viewing on Friday September 19, 2025, from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox, 435 Somerset Street, Johnstown, Pa., where a Trisagion Service will be held a 6 p.m. 

There will be a short viewing on Saturday, September 20, from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a Greek Orthodox funeral, Rev. Fr. Michael Rustick and Rev. Fr. Michael Gavrilos officiating. 

Interment Grandview Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church or St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Building Fund in memory of Mary.
