David Gruss, lovingly known to many as “Pappy Loco”, 65, of South Fork, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 4, 2023. Son of Stephen and Bridget (Beck) Gruss. Preceded in death by his father; infant sister; granddaughter, Gracie Williamson; brother-in-law, Ricky Baxter; in-laws Wayne and Shirley Baxter and nephew, Brandon Baxter.
Survived by his mother, Bridget Gruss; and his loving wife, “his angel,” of almost 45 years, Vickie; daughters, Holly (Luke) Deihl, Christina (Adam) Gruss, Kelly (Robert) Williamson, and Ericka (Travis) Hull; grandchildren, Keegan and Eli Deihl, Kendra and Cadyn Williamson and Isaak, Olivia, Levi and Stella Hull; step-grandchildren Skylee, Hayden and Landon Miller; and Daeday’s special friend, Maggie Steen. Also survived by siblings Stephen Gruss, Susan (Wallace) Dick, Patrick Gruss, Lisa (Rick) Penatzer, James (Janette) Gruss, Tom Gruss and Ron (Shannon) Gruss and numerous nieces and nephews.
Prior to being paralyzed in an accident almost 36 years ago, Dave was an employee of UPS and a longtime Teamster member. He also enjoyed playing softball in a men’s fast pitch league. Although Dave spent over half of his life in a wheelchair, he never forgot to enjoy and relish life.
He was a staple at Lady Ranger sporting events where he was all four of his daughters #1 fan. Pappy Loco loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether playing games with them, riding along on walks or watching them play sports (in person or via GameChanger), Pappy Loco was there to enjoy his time.
Dave was best known for his quick wit and sarcasm. Always ready to crack a joke (often inappropriate) and chat. He could talk to anyone and often made friends everywhere he went.
Throughout his life, Dave’s greatest joy came while beside his soulmate, Vickie. They enjoyed watching their beloved Pirates (no fair-weather fans here), grocery shopping, “directing” Vickie while she made his favorite meals, watching various television series and just sitting on the front porch or back patio taking in life.
Honoring his request, a private visitation for immediate family will be held.
Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass which will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday July 15, 2023, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, South Fork, Father Joseph C. Nale, celebrant.
Arrangements by Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society for Colon Cancer Research or Canterbury Place (Hospice Center), 310 Fisk Street Pittsburgh, Pa 15201 in memory of David Gruss.
