David E. Gates

GATES – David E., 89, Mineral Point, passed away peacefully September 21, 2025. Born August 27, 1936, in Croyle Township, son of Walter S. Gates Sr. and Jane (Goughnour) Gates-Crouse. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Walter Jr. and Donald Gates; grandson, Jesse Kirksey; stepfather, Glenn Crouse; and sister-in-law, Esther Gates.

Survived by beloved wife, Amy (Hill) Gates; sons, David K. (Kim Gabany); and Robert; daughters, Darlene Wilusz (Ernie); Patti Gates (fiancé Doug Bosley); and Amanda Oswalt (Todd); grandchildren, David Gates (Amanda), Joseph Gates (Amanda), Michael Gates (Amanda), Jaimie Gates, Bobbi Gates (Kaleb), Zachary Gates, Adam Wilusz (Katrina), Stephanie Wilusz (Kevin), Colby Jones, Melanie Jones, Makenna Oswalt, and Addison Oswalt; eight great grandchildren, brother, Russell Gates (Lois Lehman); sister-in-law, Jean (Gilpatrick) Gates; and numerous nieces and nephews.

David was a graduate of South Fork Croyle High School, class of 1954. He was a devoted husband married to the love of his life for 69 years, and a loving father and grandfather who dedicated his life to his family. He had a deep love for the outdoors and hunting and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was an expert gardener whose harvest was so bountiful he had enough zucchini and vegetables to share with everyone. He retired from Ace Drilling Coal Company. He had an enormous work ethic and an even bigger heart. He was truly respected by all who knew him. David made a lasting impact on his entire family. He leaves a legacy of integrity and love that will ripple for generations. He will be missed by everyone blessed to have known him.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork, the Reverend Gary Tustin presinding.
