SNYDER - Thomas C., age 82, of Tamarac, FL, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 after a short illness.
Born in Summerhill, PA, the third child of Harry and Gladys Snyder, Tom graduated from high school in Johnstown, PA before entering into the Air Force, where he served for four years, stationed in Nevada before being honorably discharged in 1965. After leaving the service, he moved to Neptune, NJ where he worked days at the Canada Dry Bottling Co. in Asbury Park while attending Monmouth University at night part-time on the GI Bill. Upon graduation, he returned to the military as a civilian at the Department of Defense earning several awards including the Superior Civilian Service Award for his exceptional accomplishments and dedication to the military over his 27 years of service. His final role in the government was as Chief, Mideast/Africa/Europe Branch.
Shortly after earning his degree, he met the love of his life, the former Eileen Clossey, on a blind date. Wedding bells were ringing soon thereafter, and the two were married on October 30, 1970. Tom’s work had them posted in Harrisburg, PA and Springfield, VA before returning to their beloved Jersey Shore. They settled in Little Silver, NJ, while he was stationed at Ft. Monmouth, where they remained until moving to Tamarac, FL to enjoy their retirement and golden years in the Sunshine State.
Tom was an avid runner, competing in dozens of marathons up and down the Eastern Seaboard, which he proudly always finished! He volunteered with Literacy Volunteers of America, believing the secret to any success starts with reading comprehension. He was an avid sports fan and collector of memorabilia; he had a nearly complete set of Sports Illustrated, dating back to the second issue. He somehow could never get his hands on that very first publication! An active member of St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Tamarac, he was a humble and faithful parishioner, always offering to drive folks to Mass who were unable to get there on their own. He had a huge heart and a great sense of humor, and enjoyed his daily visits with friends at his local McDonalds, catching up on gossip and news of the day.
He was the beloved husband of his wife of nearly 52 years, Eileen, and the cherished uncle of nieces Rebecca Santaniello and her husband Gerard of Wayne, NJ and Penny Tarpey and her husband Brian of Ocean Grove, NJ, as well as his great niece Delaney Tarpey and great nephews Christopher Santaniello and his wife Andrea, Thomas Santaniello and Connor Tarpey. He was predeceased by both of his parents and his two sisters, Rita Snyder in 2016 and Shirley Boardman in 2020.
A memorial celebration will be held at Sunrise Health and Rehabilitation Center, 4800 Nob Hill Rd. Sunrise, FL on Tuesday August 30 at 11 am.
Burial will be private in Summerhill, PA.
