John A. Progar Sr.

PROGAR – John Albert Sr., 88, St. Michael, passed away March 9, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Born March 28, 1932, in St. Michael, Pennsylvania; son of Michael and Elizabeth (Roeder) Progar. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Paul, William, Edward, Henry, Andy, Louis, and Mickey; and sisters, Rose Marie Myers and Elizabeth Osman.

Survived by loving wife of 65 years, Beverly (Shertzer) Progar, whom he married October 1, 1955; sons, John Jr., married to Kathleen (Garchar), Canfield, Ohio; and Joseph, married to Martie (Ostrowski), North Royalton, Ohio; grandchildren Richard (Bianca) Garchar and their children, Allie and Alex; Kate (David) Guelich and their children, Maddie and Robert; Bradley (Jamie) Garchar and their son, Nicholas; Joseph Progar and fiancé, Brianna; John, Matthew, and Michael Progar; and Michelle (Bryan) Friedmann and their children, Leo and Roman; brother, Donald, married to Joan (Zumback), Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews; and faithful dog, Trixie.

John was a lifelong member of St. Michael Catholic Church. A 1950 graduate of Adams Township High School and a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. Member of St. Michael American Legion Post 551. He worked for US Steel for 25 years before starting his own Drafting and Design company. John had a generous spirit, loved his family, and cherished the many blessings in his life. He was a man in motion and always kept busy with projects. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and was known for his wine making skills and generously sharing his wine. He was an also an accomplished boxer and a Golden Gloves Champion.

Private family visitation at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church, Monsignor David Lockard Celebrant.

Committal, St. James Cemetery. Military graveside service by St. Michael American Legion Post 551.

The family is grateful to Dr. Stotler and the staff of Windber Hospice and wish to express a special thanks to Mary McKendree and Dee Dee and Gary Breto for their kindness and care.
