MASKAL - Esther, 82, Windber, formerly of Richland, died Oct. 15, 2013, at Pettikoffer House. Born July 5, 1931, in Ehrenfeld, daughter of Joseph and Cecelia (Units) Shuman-Scaimanna. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Peter Maskal, who died Oct. 6, 2009; sisters, Josephine Christ and Cecelia Shuman; and brothers, Louis and Peter, who died in childhood. Survived by sisters, Mary Aliquo, Ehrenfeld; and Linda, wife of Michael Repko, Parma, Ohio; brother, Peter, married to Janet Betz, Manville, N.J.; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Esther greatly enjoyed serving the public. She began her career at King’s department store in downtown Johnstown. She also worked at Jupiter department store, and retired from Sears at The Galleria. If one were out and about with Esther, there would always be at least one other person who knew her and remembered her with fondness! Esther enjoyed spending time with friends in league duckpin bowling at Richland Lanes. She will be remembered for her generosity and compassion. Her home, whether on Bob Street in Richland or at the Pettikoffer House in Windber, was a place where one always felt welcome. She gave big-heartedly to those around her in need, whether family, neighbors or a favorite charity. Regardless the circumstances, Esther stood firm on her faith and chose to make the most of the situation. She was an amazing lady and had a well-lived life. Family and friends are invited to attend Divine Liturgy to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 803 Somerset Ave., Windber, Pa. 15963, by the Rev. Monsignor Raymond A. Balta. Committal, Richland Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements by Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home Inc., South Fork. As an expression of sympathy, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Operation Smile, 3641 Faculty Blvd., Virginia Beach, Va. 23453, or at www.operationsmile.org. The family wishes to acknowledge with special thanks the staff at Pettikoffer House for their loving support and care. (www.dimondfuneralhome.com)
